Last Summer represents a typical New Zealand holiday spot. The pohutukawas, bach and agapanthas are signifiers of summer. The central feature of this artwork is a storm water drain. Commonly seen around coastal areas, storm water drains would not usually be considered ‘beautiful’, but surrounding this drain is lush greenery, overgrown and thriving due to the fresh water the drain provides.
The pooled water creates a lovely olive and golden haze, reflecting the backdrop of dense plant life, creating a tranquil scene.
Painted with oil paint & oil pastels on canvas. This is the original artwork, measuring 75 x 90 cm with a 10mm wide and 4.5cm deep oak floating frame around the outside.
