Tauira Karapa is a deity (atua) connected to the different types of greenstone (pounamu) that were present in the early days. Pounamu is highly valued in te ao Maori for is strength, beauty and deep spiritual significance as taonga connecting Maori to land and whakapapa (ancestral links).
